I recently pointed out to my JW friend Mark that Watchtower teaches that only the annointed 144,000 are in the New Covenant. (That is why, when they “celebrate” the Lord’s supper once a year, almost no one eats the bread or drinks the wine. Jesus said “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood.” Only the annointed are allowed to take part, those in the great crowd must just pass the bread and wine.) He acknowledged that he knew about that teaching (not all JW’s know). So I then asked him, “If you, being in the great crowd, are not in the New Covenant, then what covenant are you in? Are you still in the old covenant, or some other covenant that I have not noticed in the Bible, or are you in no covenant at all?”
Mark had no answer, and could only say “I don’t know.” He had obviously never thought about it before. He went on to say that he didn’t think he was still in the old (law) covenent, because they believe that believers are no longer under the law. But he was stumped as to what, if any, covenant, he would be in. A bit later on I asked him what covenant, or what arrangement with Jehovah, he is in. That was me using Watchtower language, which for JW’s has become their heart language, part of their culture and mindset. That visibly bothered him, because their whole motivation in life is to be in Jehovah’s Arrangement. Mark says he will ask the elders about the covenant question. I can’t wait to hear the answer.
